BOEING - Two orders for the new 777X family arrived at Boeing in March, according to the manufacturer's order summary. As is well known, Ethiopian Airlines ordered eight 777-9s, but in addition an anonymous customer appears to have ordered 20 more.
According to aviation journalist Richard Schuurman, who writes for Aviation News Magazine and various international trade media, among others, there is a good chance that this order came from Turkish Airlines. But, of course, this has not yet been confirmed.
The Turkish carrier has previously expressed interest in the 777-9, the largest variant of the 777X family, and has been negotiating with Boeing for some time for a large aircraft order. Turkish wants to double its fleet by 2033, which is why it placed a mega-order with Airbus late last year.
he 777-9 is the successor to the Boeing 777-300ER and also the largest passenger aircraft for sale since the Airbus A380 and Boeing 747-8I were taken out of production. Certification, however, is experiencing major setbacks. As a result, the first deliveries have been delayed from 2020 to 2025.
If Turkish Airlines actually signed for the 20 aircraft, it would become the third European customer for this type, after Lufthansa and British Airways. By far the most orders for the 777-9 come from the Middle East. Emirates is the largest customer.
